The Man We Knew: The Story Behind the Song
Some songs begin with an idea. This one began with a man.
The Man We Knew was written in memory of my late husband, a man who could fill a doorway simply by standing in it. He was tall, broad, strong, deeply private, and had one of those booming West Virginia voices that made people pay attention whether he meant for them to or not. To a lot of people, he could be intimidating. But that was only one part of him.The Man at Home
The man we knew at home was fiercely loyal, humble, dependable, and a man of his word. He believed a handshake meant something, and if he gave you his word, he meant it. He loved the mountains, bass fishing, quiet places, and a life that did not need to be explained to anyone else.
More importantly, he loved Jesus. His faith was private too. It was not something he performed for other people. It was simply part of who he was. He read his Study Bible, listened to sermons, and tried to live according to the values he believed in.
A Father's Way
He carried those same expectations into fatherhood. He could be hard on his son, and at times probably harder than his son understood. In his own way, he believed part of being a father was preparing his son to become a good man. Looking at the man his son has become now, responsible, dependable, hardworking, and someone whose word still means something, I know how proud he would be. I believe he is smiling from heaven, seeing that so much of what he hoped to teach him remained.
His daughter knew another side of him entirely. She was Daddy's princess, and behind the strength, the deep voice, and the presence that could make strangers think twice, there was a gentleness that mostly belonged to the people closest to him. He protected us, loved us, and treated us like gold.
What We Keep
There are parts of his life that will always remain ours. He was a private man when he was here, and I believe honoring him also means respecting that privacy now. This song was never meant to tell every story about him. It was meant to remember the man underneath all of it: the father, the husband, the Christian, the mountain man, and the man whose strength was obvious but whose tenderness was something you had to know him to see.
When someone is gone, memories have a way of attaching themselves to ordinary things. A voice, a Bible on a table, a fishing rod, an old cap, a familiar phrase, or simply the way someone walked into a room can bring them back for a moment. Sometimes you realize that the person the world remembers is not exactly the same person the family remembers.
The Song
The Man We Knew is not every story about him. Some of those will always belong to us. It is simply about the man we loved and the man we were lucky enough to know.
